On Thursday, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg wrote to the CEOs of the country’s 10 largest airlines, telling them that the level of flight disruptions this year was “unacceptable”.

He cited data from the first six months of the year that showed 24 percent of flights were delayed and 3.2 percent were canceled.

“It’s not just numbers, it’s missed birthdays, milestones, time with loved ones and important meetings,” he wrote.
The letter comes as a battle between airlines and federal regulators has been brewing throughout the spring and summer. Passengers preparing to travel over Labor Day may experience flight disruptions that will make travel impossible for many this year. Airlines blame the problems on labor difficulties and the quick recovery from the pandemic.
Buttigieg wrote that his office would post a chart online comparing each airline’s policies on making delayed or canceled flights available to passengers under the airline’s control. Buttigieg asked airlines to provide at least a meal voucher if delays exceed three hours and accommodation if they leave passengers at the airport overnight.
“I want to repeat what you’ve heard me say many times: Americans expect, when they buy a plane ticket, to get to their destination safely and affordably,” Buttigieg wrote.

Data reported by airlines and published by the Department for Transport show that airlines are responsible for most of this year’s delays through May, as well as an unusually high percentage of flight cancellations, though not most of them .
Airlines are reducing their flight schedules to ensure the reliability of the flights they operate. “We are past the letter stage with approximately 50,000 return flights canceled,” McGee said in a statement. “As airline executives ponder their letter, there are unprecedented delays in engaging with consumers, missing out on refunds and sleeping in terminals. If Secretary Buttigieg cannot effectively combat these problems, it is time to empower the politicians who will.”
The Department of Transport has proposed clarifying the rules regarding refunds for delayed and canceled flights, as well as creating new protections for travelers who become seriously ill before departure. A committee advising the Department will consider the proposals on Monday and they will be open to public comment.

“The controller canceled takeoff clearance for an American Airlines Boeing 737 out of an abundance of caution,” the FAA said.
The agency is investigating, FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said in an email to the Globe on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday afternoon that the agency was aware of the incident but had not opened an investigation.
American Airlines said its flight from Boston to Chicago “returned to the departure gate after revoking a takeoff clearance issued by air traffic control.”

Spirit Airlines Flight 1444 is a daily flight from Atlanta to Boston scheduled to arrive in Logan at 1pm, according to the airline’s website.
“The safety of our guests and crew members is our top priority, and we will provide all necessary assistance to the FAA as they review this matter,” Spirit said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, it was at least the fourth time this year that planes at Logan have accidentally flown close or separated from each other.

In February, the National Transportation Safety Board reported that a private plane took off without permission in Logan and nearly crashed into a JetBlue plane trying to land.

According to the NTSB’s final report, the JetBlue pilot had to take evasive action and perform a “climb maneuver” to avoid a potentially devastating collision. Then he landed safely.
According to an NTSB report released earlier this month, the incident was captured in a photograph taken from the cockpit of a JetBlue aircraft, with a Lear jet flying directly in front of it.
